Call for Applications: Graduate Assistant for the Writing Studio 2026-2027

The Writing Studio and Tutoring Services (WSTS) office is seeking a Graduate or Professional Student Worker with federal work study to serve as Graduate Assistant for the Writing Studio during the 2026-2027 academic year.

Position Overview

The Graduate Assistant for the Writing Studio will provide administrative support for a variety of Writing Studio projects and initiatives throughout the academic year and have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing support and development of the Undergraduate and Graduate Writing Consultant staff and to the creation of new resources and programming.

In doing so, this position will assist the Writing Studio in fulfilling its mission of building an accessible, engaging, and research-informed space that supports writers, instructors of writing, and all the ways writing is an essential medium for learning, discovery, serving our communities within the university.

The Graduate Assistant for the Writing Studio is a primarily in-person, on-campus position with the Writing Studio and Tutoring Services office. The GAWS will report to the Assistant Director of the Writing Studio, while working closely with the Director, Associate Director, and other members of the WSTS administrative team.

Additional Considerations

  • Start date: Exact start date negotiable, but preferably by August 17, 2026.
  • Duration: The position is expected to continue through the fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters.
  • Weekly hours: Exact weekly hours commitment negotiable within the range of 5-15 hours per week, depending on candidate’s availability.
  • Pay: Pay starts at $15.50 per hour. For an experienced Graduate Writing Consultant stepping into this role, pay will be equal to the experienced Graduate Writing Consultant’s anticipated hourly rate for 2026-2027 plus $1.00 per hour.

This Graduate Writing Consultant position requires federal work study, and it can be filled by two types of candidates with distinct backgrounds and levels of experience as described in accordion sections below.

  • An Experienced Graduate Writing Consultant with Federal Work Study

    An experienced Graduate Writing Consultant with federal work study returning to staff for 2026-2027.

    An ideal candidate of this type will

    • be willing and able to take on additional weekly hours in the GAWS role, while continuing to offer weekly writing consultation hours.
    • have at least one year of experience as a Graduate Writing Consultant–or equivalent–and familiarity with Writing Studio operations and offerings.
    • be highly organized, team-oriented, and able to learn on the job, adapt, and respond effectively to shifting priorities and needs throughout the academic year
    • be interested in taking on new challenges and gaining professional development experience within the context of a higher education academic support unit.
  • A Graduate or Professional Student with Federal Work Study who is New to the Writing Studio

    A graduate or professional student with federal work study who is new to the Writing Studio, but interested in gaining experience within the context of a higher education academic support unit.

    An ideal candidate of this type will

    • be highly organized, team-oriented, and able to learn on the job, adapt, and respond effectively to shifting priorities and needs throughout the academic year.
    • have interest or experience in supporting student learning about and through writing and/or literacy. Familiarity with writing center work preferred, but not required.
    • have interest or experience in developing educational resources, publicity materials, and communications; coordinating events or programming.
    • have excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work cooperatively with diverse students and staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

The position’s duties and responsibilities are likely to include the following:

  • Carry out a weekly communications plan for various Writing Studio workshops, events, and programming (for instance sending emails, submitting materials to campus newsletters, distributing flyers, updating Writing Studio website, and posting to social media).
  • Contribute to the design and preparation of promotional materials related to Writing Studio workshop, events, and programming and to the creation of social media content, as needed.
  • Create and manage Anchor Link event pages and related attendance data collection.
  • Assist with program outreach by representing the Writing Studio at various campus events (tabling, presentation requests) and through classroom visit presentations, as assigned.
  • Attend and support Writing Studio special events (such as the Undergraduate Writing Symposium) and other programming, as needed.
  • Assist with data collection and reporting, as needed
  • Depending on experience and interest,
    • Lead existing writing workshops offered by the Writing Studio or requested by campus partners, student orgs, and others, as needed
    • Develop and lead new Writing Studio workshops on topics that align with current office priorities
    • Develop new Writing Studio handouts or other resources that align with current office priorities
    • Provide mentorship to a small group of new and experienced Writing Consultants
    • Lead a Writing Consultant staff meeting (or two) over the course of the academic year
    • Conduct writing consultant observations and follow-up coaching discussions during fall semester and self-assessment debrief discussions in spring
  • Other duties and special projects assigned as time and interests permit.
